Casuarina Smith Wins SA Girls on the Gas

21 October 2008 - The Gillman Motocross circuit in metropolitan Adelaide played host to the penultimate round of the Honda Girls on the Gas Competition recently.

18 year old Casuarina Smith put together a sensational days riding to take out the event by the slimmest of margins.

When the final scores were tallied at the end of the day it was Smith who came out on top by a mere point from three other girls who all tied on points for second.

In the four points scoring categories Smith came a close second to Alison Leach in the Shuttle Run Fitness Test, while finishing a consistent top three in the Public Speaking sector. A third and a fourth respectively in the 'On Bike' technique and lap time sectors was enough to take the victory for the South Australian round.

"This is my third year participating in the Girls on the Gas and I've finished on the podium every time, so it's great to finally get a win," said Smith.

"I actually had to borrow a bike for the event as mine was in being repaired. I thought I was going to miss out this year so I'm quite shocked."

Finishing just one point behind Casuarina Smith were three girls snapping at her heels. Steph Cutler was in a league of her own on the motorcycling, clearly winning the 'on bike' technique and lap time sectors, however a sixth in both the Public Speaking and Fitness categories cost her dearly.

Zoe Harkness performed consistently throughout the day with a second placing in the lap time sector to Cutler with top five finishes in the remaining categories.

The third girl to finish equal on points for second was last year's South Australian winner Alison Leach. Alison won two categories in Public Speaking and Fitness. Leach only needed to finish one position higher in either of the 'On bike' categories to take the overall victory on the day with a countback.

The Final round of the state legs will be run this weekend at Port Macquarie NSW.

The big 'Final Showdown' will be at Bacchus Marsh, Vic on November 2nd where all seven state winners will go head to head to see who will be crowned the Honda Girls on the Gas winner for 2008.
