GHR Honda at 2009 Finke Desert Race

10 June 2009 – The June long weekend once again saw Australia’s best desert racers converge on Alice Springs for the 34th annual running of the Finke Desert Race.

A full capacity field of 500 motorcycles were once again lining up to do battle with the desert. With Honda the most popular choice with 167 red entries. GHR Honda debuted Honda’s all new CRF450 R9 with riders Jason Hill & newcomer Chad Billett from Roxby Downs SA.

Honda’s all new CRF motocross weapon was once again set up for the desert with long range dry break tanks, 18 inch wheels and different offset triple clamps to attack Australia’s roughest sprint desert race. Along with the GHR Honda boys, Honda was also admirably represented by the local Desert Edge Team. After Saturday’s prologue which saw Desert Edge rider, Caleb Auricht take out top honours, the field was under way at 11.30 on Sunday morning.

500 riders attacked the 228 km sandy wooped out track and by the end of the event GHR Honda rider Chad Billett had finished 3rd Outright and 1st in Class.

Chad commented; “A big thanks to Marty and Simon and all the GHR crew, along with my family. The bike didn't miss a beat all weekend, it was good to stand on the outright podium and win the class. I’m now keener than ever to get to the top step next year.”

GHR Honda’s Jason Hill slipped a disc in his back while training mid week, he rode the first leg of the event and put the bike in the top 10 outright. But due to his medical condition decided it was wise not to ride the return leg.

Desert Edge riders Mark Sladek and Michael Walsh finished 2nd and 3rd in Class 5 (up to 450cc 4 stroke class) to debut Honda’s new CRF450 R9 with a clean sweep of this the largest category. Class 3 (up to 250cc 2 stroke), Class 4 (up to 250cc 4 stroke), Class 6 (Masters) and Class 8 (Veterans) were also all won by Honda riders.
