Local Honda Dealer Amasses Amazing 13th Beach Race Title

17 October 2008 - Mick Hansen, Dealer Principal at Redline Honda in Mackay, has won his 13th King of the Beach crown at the annual Grasstree Beach Races.

The veteran was up against stiff competition this year including Steve Dinsdale on the $35,000 machine that won the French beach race at Le Touquet.

Hansen followed up on his ’07 win with another stellar performance on his modified Honda CR500, one of Honda’s original motocross winning machines that also has multiple Finke Desert titles to its name.

Hansen's victory yesterday was even more remarkable considering the fact that he had to be hospitalised recently for health issues.

"That really put me behind," he admitted. "I also had to work on the bike until 2 am the day before racing, so it was a big relief to take the win.”

Hansen first won the annual event in 1988 and said this year attracted more competitors from across the country than before.

The event raises money for a number of causes including schools and non-profit organisations around the area.

The beach races – the only one of their kind in the southern hemisphere - started at Bucasia in 1927 before moving to Grasstree Beach in the early 1990s.

Whilst CR500’s are no longer produced, Honda’s current range of four-stroke CRF’s are continuing the winning tradition in sandy conditions, having taken out the Australian Safari (CRF450X), Finke Desert Race (CRF450R), Australian Off Road Championships and World Enduro Championships (CRF250X) in 2008.
