Jess Gardiner Wins NSW Honda Girls On The Gas

31 August, 2009 - 15 year old Richmond rider Jess Gardiner has come out on top after a close battle in the NSW penultimate leg of the Honda Girls on the Gas Competition.

The Hasting’s Valley circuit, situated near Port Macquarie in the states north played host to the event and attracted girls from all over the state.

Superb weather conditions and a well prepared track meant the girls were all smiles as they battled it out to see who would represent NSW later in the year for the ‘Final Showdown’.

From the outset it was clear we had a close battle on our hands between Jess Gardiner and last years runner up Ashleigh Blenkiron.

The girls battled all weekend and after all four categories were complete Gardiner and Blenkiron were tied on points. A count-back was needed to determine an overall winner and it was Jess Gardiner who topped the poles after winning two individual categories to Blenkiron’s one category win.

Blenkiron scored a second in the public speaking, a win in the ‘on bike’ technique sector, a second in the lap time category and a third in the fitness test, while Gardiner started off slow with a fourth in the public speaking, then stormed home with a second in the ‘on bike’ technique and two wins in the lap time and fitness sectors.

“I thought I’d blown it after the public speaking,” said Gardiner. “But I’m so excited to have won. I was fairly confident with my speed on the bike and my fitness but I knew Ash would be hard to beat in the public speaking and on bike technique. It was always going to be close.”

Rounding out the top three overall was Honda rider Elle Jones who scored well in all four categories, with a second placing in both the public speaking and fitness categories being her highlights.

The final round of the Honda Girls on the Gas Competition will be held this coming weekend at Bacchus Marsh, Victoria.
