Zac Ainscough Wins Queensland Honda Grom’s On The Gas

14 August 2009 - In it’s second year running the Honda Grom’s on the Gas Competition is gaining momentum week by week as the national series landed in Coolum, Queensland for last weekend’s penultimate round.

Hot and humid weather conditions provided the backdrop for the junior boys participating in the two day event, with the Coolum track as always coming up a treat.

From the outset it was clear that there was plenty of natural talent amongst the Queensland juniors, with any one of about four riders in with a chance to take out the overall.

However, on day two when the pressure was on it was 15 year old Currimundi rider Zac Ainscough who stepped up to the plate.

Zac started off in good form with a solid second placing in the public speaking. From there Ainscough stormed the competition with easy wins in both the ‘on bike’ technique and lap time sectors before decimating the field in the shuttle run beep test.

Just one position higher in the public speaking would have seen the Queenslander take the first ever clean sweep in the history of the Honda Grom’s and Girls on the Gas Competitions.

“I’m stoked to have won,” said Ainscough.
“Yesterday I wasn’t even thinking about the competition, I just came here to learn some new techniques and didn’t think I’d have a chance, but today I started to think hey, I could win this thing.”

Finishing a solid second overall was Darcy Cavanagh who started the ball rolling with a win in the public speaking before finishing second to Zac Ainscough in all three remaining categories.

Rounding out the top three overall was Honda 150cc rider Connor Weiss. Connor improved greatly from last year with his highlight being a terrific second placing in the ‘on bike’ technique sector.

The final round of the Honda Grom’s on the Gas Competition will be held this coming weekend at Western Australia’s Coastal circuit.
