Honda’s Maxwell Moves Forward At Queensland

Teknic Honda’s star Supersport rider Wayne Maxwell progressed strongly throughout Queensland’s double header round of the Australian Championships, moving up from a sixth place finish in round four, to a second place finish in round five over the course of the event.

The Victorian based rider was on the verge of scoring his first season win in the last race of the weekend on board his Pirelli-shod CBR600RR, however a small albeit crucial last lap error robbed him of the glory.

“I feel I could've won the final race, but I made the slightest error on the last lap at turn 3 and lost some speed into turn 4. Thanks to the hard work and support provided by the Team, I was still able to finish on a good note and step up to the podium,” Maxwell said.

On his front row qualifying position and final results, Team Manager Paul Free said Maxwell’s performance is indicative of the rider’s strong determination.

“Wayne had good speed in his first qualifying session which landed him on provisional pole position. He was then forced to take part in Q2 after Josh Waters produced a lap time 0.3 quicker. In three flying laps Wayne was able to drop his qualifying time by 0.2 to 1.11.4, but that wasn’t enough to secure pole position,” Paul explained.

Although Maxwell struggled to keep up with the pace-setters during Saturday’s round four, he found a renewed energy and by weekend’s end showed the signs of being the rider to beat.

“Wayne’s race craft was impeccable in that final race and his lunges under brakes were breathtaking,” Paul said. “He really stuck to his plan and showed great determination to secure second place on the podium.”

Maxwell goes to Tasmania’s penultimate round in August holding third place in the Championship.

“I can’t wait for racing at Symmons Plains,” he said. “I’ve got a good plan in place and am confident we will be even more competitive.”
