In Form Maxwell Takes Supersport Win at Phillip Island

8 October - Teknic Honda’s rising Supersport star, Wayne Maxwell, showed exactly how far he has come in his first year with the manufacturer’s factory team after a scintillating performance in the support races of Phillip Island’s MotoGP.

After only four laps in qualifying, Maxwell put his CBR600RR on the top spot of the grid, proceeding to take out a near perfect performance with a second and two first places come race-time.

His points haul gives the Victorian rider a maiden overall round win, and a significant confidence boost to see him through to the end of the Australian Championships in two weeks time.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Wayne noted. “The bike was extremely well prepped by the guys in the Teknic Honda Team for this meeting, and the Pirelli tyres are performing particularly well. They were awesome in both wet or dry conditions, and the level of grip provided right from the first lap was unbelievable.”

“That first race, I led all the way until the last metre or so when Josh (Waters) got me for the win.”

After the second race was cancelled due to late scheduling, Maxwell came out all guns firing on Saturday morning, winning race three by over two seconds from Bryan Staring.

“I’ve worked a lot on improving my race strategy over this year with the team, and I think it really showed this weekend.”

“I led the third race from start to finish, and felt comfortable from the moment the race started.”

“In race four, I missed the jump off the start, but I knew I had to get to the front of the field immediately.”

“I pushed extremely hard on that first lap and took control of the race from the start of lap two. I rode hard and consistent, and was knocking on the lap record every lap.”

“I missed out on the current lap record by something like only .05 of a second so I was really happy with that result.”

Maxwell, who currently sits third in the Aussie titles, is looking forward to keeping the momentum going for the remainder of the year.

“I can’t win the title this year, but I feel like everything is moving in the right direction for me now. I’m really comfortable on the Honda and I am very excited about the future.”

Team Manager Paul Free said Maxwell has shown great determination and focus over the season, culminating in his much deserved win at Phillip Island.

“Wayne’s results over the MotoGP weekend were nothing but outstanding.”

“He is so focused right now and has such a desire to win races. His CBR600 operated flawlessly right throughout the event, and the Pirelli tyres gave Wayne so much feel and confidence, he was clearly able to put the bike wherever he wanted on the track in both wet and dry conditions.”
